Coachella Livestream

Contribution • Animation Lead + Animation

I had the opportunity to lead the animation team for this incredibly fun spot announcing the Coachella Livestream on YouTube. In addition to some funky typography animation, we got to ingest tons of unique footage to incorporate into our designs and animations. Who doesn’t love funky gradients, warpy type, and rotoscoped celebrities? Watch the final spot below, as well as some R&D :)

Alternative Formats

When all was said and done, we delivered a hero 30s spot, with 15s and 6s cutdowns, in both 16x9 and 9x16. From the beginning, we worked with this in mind, building our animations with the ability to scale to them to different aspect ratios. Below are the 9x16 vertical version. You can see by the boards how we were able to adapt the designs fro the 16x9 to a vertical format without losing any of the spirit of the original design and animation, even allowing for some more bespoke moments with type layout and rotoscoped footage elements.

Early Stages R&D

Once in a while, you get to work on a project that is fun at every turn, from R&D all the way through production to delivery. This was one of them. When I joined the project at the beginning, I hit the ground running to establish the animation language. Below are some initial explorations for the motion language of the piece, as well as out proof of concepts for the behavior of the typography.

Originally, we thought we wanted to go for a more tactile, spray painted vibe. This quickly turned into more elegant/graphic gradients. We then experimented with a shape language to contain these gradients, in the end opting for full bleed gradients. But I really enjoyed how these tests turned out with the grain texture and abstract shapes.
