Google × BUCK

Gemini

Contribution • Animation & Design

Google came to BUCK to ideate and create the visual identity for their AI Assistant Gemini. There was a long R&D phase where we explored numerous looks and behaviors for the Assistant, and how it would ingest information from users and display it back to them. In addition to the visual identity of the Assistant, we also created a series of animations to walk users through the setup of their personal assistant. The final deliverables for these asks were Lottie compatible files, in both light and dark mode.

Voice Assistant

The visual identity of the Gemini needed to fit within the current Google brand, while also pushing its boundaries and taking it somewhere new. We explored a lot with color, and diffusion from solid shape to blurred gradients. This spoke to the nebulous nature of speaking with an AI Assistant, asking it questions, and ending up with a concise, clear answer. The fluctuation between blurred and sharp edges speaks to the constant thinking nature of Gemini.

We experimented with how to words input by the user would appear on the screen. In the tests above, each word or beat spoken by the user appears as a shape. The Google colors were used to indicate that Gemini was thinking and putting Google’s resources to work to find an answer to the inquiry.

In addition to voice assistant, we were also asked to create a series of animations to aid the setup process of the app. Below are the animations that we created, and I had the task of making them lottie compatible. The project went through another round after I left the team, but these were the versions that I left off with.
